Living and Loving to Learn

Standard 2

Educators act ethically and maintain the integrity, credibility and reputation of the profession.

In practicum 391, standard 2 was a focus for myself as I made the switch from beign a student myself to now being in the teaching profession. To be ethical means relating to the morals and knowledge personally and professionally. In 391 practicum I was able to remain ethical with the students and other teachers based on my own personal and professional morals.

My morals include fall into line with the teaching profession by keeping a teacher student relationship. This means that certain information is not shared with the students about myself, nor was I trying to obtain information from them that does not relate to my ability to teach them. This was something that I was quite successful at obtaining. Relationships and making connections with students was one of my strongest abilities the I demonstrated in 391 practicum. I was able to keep a professional relationship while still gaining their trust and maintaining the integrity, credibility and reputation of being a teacher. I did so by sharing information at the beginning about myself such as I am a twin and that I have a smoothie for breakfast every morning, but did not need to share what I did outside of my time from practicum or school. By applying standard 2 to my teaching practice it allowed me to then become a professional in the eyes of the students rather then just a student teacher. A level of respect was given to myself from the students and in return (as this was an intermediate class) I was able to teach them like the young adults they were.

This meant that when we were having conversations they could be more mture without crossing a boundry line. As well as addressing expectations that a teacher should require, while still being able to have fun and be professional. The line between goffy fun and professional fun while I did find easy to implement, is still a fine line that I believe I will need to be aware of in all future classes I will encounter. The ability for students to want to goof off, or share to much can impact standard 2 and I want to make sure that as a future educator I am continuously keeping this a top priority to make sure that I am building relationships with students while still remaining professional.
